The Catcher in the Rye
A “Catcher in the Rye” refers to someone on the rye catching people,
mostly children. In The Catcher in the Rye, the rye represents childhood, and the catcher is
the protector of the running children. The protector watches out for the
children’s adulthood, and in this case, Holden is the catcher. For Holden, it is important that he saves children from falling into adulthood. All his life he had nothing to persevere, until his sister, Phoebe questioned him about his future life. Now, all he
dreams to be is the “Catcher in the Rye”.
Holden did not want anything to do with life and he wanted to run away from society. Nothing about him changed, even after all the long talks with his old teachers from Pencey Prep. He still thought of school as useless, and does not ponder upon interest for that kind of ideal. All of his old teachers emphasized how Holden needed to start planning for a future and start becoming successful, because they knew he had the potential to. However, when he had the same discussion with Phoebe about his life and future, she ultimately made him realize what he has been doing
to his life, and it made him want to become something or make something
useful of himself. Although Phoebe states that Holden seems to be hateful towards
everything and everyone, he eventually proves to her that he changes that perspective. He decides that he wants
to protect children from adulthood and most of all, sexuality. Most of this
motivation comes from Phoebe, because he did not want her, or children like her to end up as corrupted as the world.
In the museum when Phoebe pleaded Holden if she could tag along with
him and skip school, this request ultimately brought Holden to his full attention. This was his actual wake up call in
life, and it made him realize that Phoebe, the most important person he truly
cares about is following in his footsteps. He did not want her to touch the
adult world, since it was corrupted and filled with phonies. At Phoebe’s school,
before they met up at the museum, he tried to cover all the profanity he lingered upon.
But eventually he figured it was nearly impossible to cover up the filthy world
of adulthood. No matter how much he tries to erase, there would
always be exposure of sexuality throughout the whole world, and there was nothing
he could do about it. Thus, in my opinion, it is impossible to prevent corrupting children at an early age.
Throughout the events of this story, and what Holden has been through in
life, he wants to protect the children’s innocence of the adult world, and keep
the children pure as long as he can. Throughout his life, Holden realizes how corrupted the world is, and later decides that he wants to do something
about it. However, there is nothing Holden can do because no matter how much he
tries to cover up the corrupted world, there would always be a small piece left over that he missed.
Holden wants to become a “Catcher in the Rye”, and catch children from
falling into adulthood. He wants the children to stay pure and innocent as long
as they can, because Holden does not want the children to realize how corrupted the world is. Even if
Holden tries to cover up the corrupted adult world as much as he can, or as
best he can, he can not. There is no way in hiding the truth, and so therefore he
wishes to be the “Catcher in the Rye” and to save childrens’ innocence.
